This week, our class was tasked with looking up resources available to us as Graduate students at Old Dominion University. We were encouraged to look at the Center for Career and Leadership Development (CCLD) and Monarch Internship and Co-op Office (MICO). As a military-affiliated student, I also include the Military Connection Center (MCC).
The CCLD offers many resources to help students develop leadership skills and prepare for a career post-graduation. One resource I use and find very beneficial is the Handshake App. This app allows students to connect with ODU employers, students, and alumni. Whether you are looking for a part-time job, internship, entry-level position, or professional opportunities, this app has an easy and accessible interface. They also have a resume workshop and can work one-on-one with a resume. For veterans who are having trouble translating their military skills to a civilian resume, I recommend emailing the resume team beforehand to be matched with someone more skilled in that area.
Another option would be to go to the Military Connection Center to have their team review your resume. They also assist in interview preparations, how to dress, and how to communicate in a professional environment.
MICO supports work-based learning initiatives at Old Dominion University. During my last year at ODU, I plan on partaking in an internship, but I need to understand what all the internship needs to entail. Their office helps locate internships, but if you find an internship opportunity, they can also help create the internship position. This office also hosts seminars and events to educate students on their options.
Transitioning from an active duty service member to a full-time student to a professional career within less than two years is daunting and can feel very overwhelming at times. I am glad to know that I have the support of the MCC, CCLD, and MICO to help with these life transitions. I am seeking the help that is being offered, and taking life one step at a time.
